Healys News on Food, Golf, Fishing and Seasonal Events

Welcome to Healys 2008

FIRST  SALMON OF THE YEAR

The first salmon of the 2008 season was caught on Monday last, St Patrick’s Day, on the East Mayo Anglers’ Association water. The fish, a fine 9 lbs fresh run salmon was caught by Mr Phil Beirne, Castlebar, and was taken on a Blue Devon spinner. The following day Tuesday, the second salmon of the season, which was released, was also taken on the East Mayo water by Mr Seamus Cummins, Bohola fishing the fly. This was followed, this morning, Wednesday by the third fish which came to Mr Martin Conroy, Ballina fishing worm on the Ballina Salmon Anglers’ water. Martin has regularly taken the first fish of the season in previous years.

These catches indicate that salmon are now starting to lie in their traditional spots making for an increasingly good outlook for angling prospects on the Moy. With water levels dropping, and fish known to be running the system, the prospects for salmon fishing over Easter weekend look good.  As in previous years, the Board is offering free fishing on the Ridge Pool, in Ballina, up until the first salmon is caught

The Cloongee Fishery, which enjoyed excellent spring salmon fishing last year, is now under the management of the Board and permits are available from Tiernan’s Tackle Shop, Foxford. Further information on angling in Ireland’s North Western Region can be found on the Board’s website www.northwestfisheries.ie

Here at Healys we have some more news….

We have Fly Fishing Tuition available at Healy’s.

Paddy McDonnell is a local man who has fished the Moy and all the local rivers and lakes from childhood.  Paddy puts this wealth of knowledge to good use as he guides his clients in all methods of angling for salmon, trout, pike, and ferox.  All the specialised and varied techniques of spinning, bait fishing and trolling are taught.  But it is the teaching of fly-casting and fly-fishing that Paddy loves most of all.

His unique style of teaching is focused on practical applications and as a result, a lot of Paddy’s fly-casting instruction is done while the client actually fishes the river or Lough.

Fly casting and fly fishing are sometimes portrayed as being difficult and complex, but this need not be true, with a good instructor by your side most people make good progress and start to enjoy their fly fishing straight away.

Paddy is a qualified fly casting instructor with A.P.G.A.I. and also with the Federation of Fly fishers (USA)  He has represented Ireland at the World Masters Fly casting Championships and is a former member of The Irish Trout Fly Fishing Team.

Paddy also takes fishermen fly fishing for Pike,

this method is becoming very popular with good sized fish being caught – you should see the ones that get away!!!!!!

This is becoming very popular with game and course fishermen – special rods have been developed, a 9ft rod with a 8-10WF line or shooting head are ideal. A two metre leader connected to a 30cms wire leader with a strong link to connect the fly – away you go!!!

There are several loughs’ locally that we recommend for pike:-

Levalley is situated about 4 miles west from the hotel,

it is approx.350 acres and situated at the foot of Nephin Mountain. It holds a good stock of pike up to

10kgs, along with perch and a small population of trout. Access is good by bank and boat.

Derryhick is approx 4 miles from the hotel towards Castlebar. The lake holds a good stock of pike, perch and roach. Good bank fishing is available from the east side.

Carrowkerbily is six miles north of Foxford on the east of the River Moy. The shore of the lake is mostly tree-lined, so it is best fished from a boat. There is a plentiful amount of pike up to 12kg plus smaller numbers of perch and trout. Ramp access is available for boats.

Ballymore lake is just a few miles east of Carrowkerbily near Attymass. Again, a ramp for boats and good stocks of pike and perch.

There are numerous smaller lakes around Kiltimagh, Claremorris and Castlebar.

General information:

Bait fishing – dead baits include roach, mackerel, smelt and herring. Bait fishing with floats and rig with two treble hooks are usually recommended. The use of live bait is prohibited.

Other interests in the area

Do you like gardening, or just looking at gardens?

Well, we have some excellent ‘Posh’ gardens in close

proximity to us.

Enniscoe House and Gardens – approx 3 acres of garden, including a restored Victorian walled garden

surrounded by pleasure grounds, a rockery, so elaborate you will want to go home and create your own. The garden has been restored in recent years, not quite Helligan, but well worth a visit. The grounds extend down to the shores of Conn. Enniscoe also houses The North Mayo Family Heritage Centre – so if you want to trace your Mayo roots – this is the place to visit.

Turlough Park, apart from being part of the National Museum of Ireland, it is a beautiful Victorian house dating from 1865 featuring a Mansard roof. The house was built in 1865 and features an ornamental glasshouse and an unusual curtilinear conservatory on a stable wall. The garden has many features including

terraces, a man-made lake and islands. A rockery with flowerbeds and lawns. The museum also has lots of interesting features and courses on local crafts – some long forgotten.

Westport House, is quite breathtaking in it’s beauty,

parts of the house date from 1685 and the interiors

are quite splendid. The gardens are early 20th century

and have been loving restored and developed. The house has been in the Browne family for generations being connected to the ‘The Pirate Queen’ who plagued

the navy of Queen Elizabeth 1st of England.

For those of you who like a drive through spectacular scenery, what could be better than a drive to:-

Kylemore Abbey in Co. Galway. This journey takes you

past the river Eriff on one side and the Partry Mountains on the other, through the Leenaun valley

with Aasleagh Falls and Killary Harbour. One of the finest gardens in Ireland, the six acre Victorian walled garden of Kylemore was created by Mitchell Henry along with the building of Kylemore Castle (now Kylemore Abbey) circa 1867. The garden has two very

distinct areas – The Kitchen Garden and the Flower Garden, the garden is completely enclosed by a brick

and limestone wall. Two of the 21 glasshouses have been restored. The Head Gardener’s House and Workmens Bothy are open to visitors.

Further around the N59 is:-

Ballynahinch Castle, situated in Ballinafad, Connemara.

The castle is over 200 years old and has one of Connemara’s oldest gardens. The gardens are in a magnificent setting above the Ballynahinch River with the Twelve Bens in the distance. The 450 acre estate features riverside and lake walks in gardens that have been lovingly attended for over 50 years, They are on many levels set amongst mature trees and shrubs.

There are other gardens in the area, perhaps not quite so spectacular, but all beautiful in their own way.

Brigit’s Garden in Roscahill, Co Galway is unique – not a traditional garden, but one that has been themed to celebrate the four Celtic festivals. It has a nature trail running through woodlands, meadows and Ogham trees. It has a thatched roundhouse, ring fort, children’s trail and play area. The Garden also runs educational programmes for adults and children.

So you can be sure of finding an interesting garden to suit your interest and inspire you to create your own masterpiece!!
